History of the bean bag chair

The first bean bag chair was created by the Italian designers Gatti, Paolini, and Teodora while working for the Zanotta Company in 1969. These first bean bag chairs were called Soccos which were pear-shaped leather bags filled with Styrofoam beans.

When the Socco went into mass production, after several failed attempts, it became the basic model for all bean bag chairs to come. Although unconfirmed, it is rumored that the Socco was actually discovered by accident. This discovery came from a Styrofoam factory that put all the leftover pieces from the production line in a bag. This new fad soon became a very popular item because the Socco was the first chair to move with the person sitting in it.

What are the beans made of?

Bean bag beans are made from Polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam. There are two types of Polystyrene beans used for bean bags: virgin and recycled. Virgin beans are specifically made for bean bag chairs and are brand new. Recycled beans are made by grinding up the hard molded Styrofoam typically used as packing materials for things like TV sets and computers. Since this packing material is only used one time and would otherwise be thrown into a landfill, it is the preferred filling for most of the bean bag manufacturers.

Can I purchase an inner liner for my bean bag?

The bean bags (Polystyrene fill) do not come with inner liners. Only the FUF Chairs have this option.

Are bean bag chairs safe for children?

Absolutely! Our bean bag chairs are double stitched and double zippered with a safety lock. For additional safety, they come with their zipper pull-tab removed. In case you need to open the zipper, just use a paper clip as your pull tab. Note: as with any product, children should be supervised using a bean bag chair.
